Dorothy (Sherry) Robina Dixon: March 11, 1924 - March 25, 2022.
Our truly loving mother, grandmother and sister-in-law passed away peacefully and among family after a full and joyful life. She will be dearly missed. Dorothy, known fondly as Sherry, was pre-deceased by her loving husband Stuart Edward Dixon. Sherry leaves behind her children, Stuart, Christine (Rainer) and Laurel (Jeremy); grandchildren Kevin (Sarah), Eric (Jessica) and Benjamin; and sister-in-law Beatrice Millar (Don). Sherry was the heart of the entire family and nurtured us all as only she knew how.
Our mother earned a Masters Degree in Home Economics at Cornell University, and while teaching there, she met Stuart. The couple came back to Guelph to start their life together. Sherry chose to be a stay-at-home mother who really didn’t stay at home. With three children underfoot, Sherry focused additional time and energy on community service and social action. She was a co-founding member of the Guelph Unitarian Fellowship, actively supported the Unitarian Service Committee (now called Seed Change) and also became Chairperson of the Community Service Council Childcare Committee. Sherry was instrumental in opening a much-needed daycare centre and established the first subsidized daycare for low-income families in Guelph.
Mom nurtured not only her family, but also her friendships. She loved to entertain, and guests were served lavish dinners with homemade dinner rolls and fancy desserts. Mom also went out of her way for friends and even those she may not have known so well. Somehow she always knew how to help others, usually without them even needing to ask.
Mom loved refinishing antiques bargained for at auction, hooking rugs, and crafting. At the cottage you could find her fishing or out exploring the lake. She loved a boat ride. Together with Dad, she travelled the world and enjoyed many an evening on the dance floor. Her three children continue her family traditions of birding, pickling and bargain hunting.
The private family inurnment at Woodlawn Memorial Park will take place at a later date. Sherry and family appreciated the care and attention she received during her stay at the Wenleigh Long Term Care in Mississauga. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Sherry's wishes, donations may be made to the Unitarian Service Committee (now Seed Change) or the Unitarian Congregation of Guelph. Condolences can be sent to www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com.
