Died peacefully, at the Elliott Community, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday January 10, 2024. George was in his 87th year. Born in San Giorgio Morgeto on August 15th, 1937, to Francesco and Francesca Raso, George was the oldest of seven children. It was in San Giorgio where he first came to understand the value of family and a loving community. It was here that George learned his cabinetry craft from his own father. His skill as a cabinet maker had a profound impact on his life.
In 1964 George established his business, George’s Furniture and built his reputation as a master cabinet maker. He was passionate about his career and earned the respect of many for his beautiful work. His business provided another opportunity for George to build relationships. “The Shop” became a meeting place for friends and colleagues until his retirement.
George was a beloved husband, brother, father, and “Pop”. In 1962 He met the love of his life, Rose, and they married in 1965. In the years that followed, their family grew to include 4 children and later, 4 grandchildren, all of whom were a great source of pride for George.
George cherished his family and friends and had an open-door policy at his home. He joyfully received many guests around the kitchen table on Woolwich St, sharing his wine, a beer, maybe homemade salami, and many laughs and stories. His outgoing personality, sense of humour, and generous spirit made him a great host.
George is survived by his devoted wife, Rose, and his children Nancy, Michelle (Craig MacKinnon), Christopher (Julie Almond), Mark (Nikki Edwards), and the late Francis (1967). He will be missed by his grandsons Luke, Sam, Tom, and Davey, whom he adored. He is also survived by his siblings Ernestina (late George Tedesco), Dominic, Mike, Concettina (Raniere Seminara). He is predeceased by his sisters Angelina (Salvatore Surace) and Caterina (Luciano Baldarelli).
George was a much-loved brother-in-law to Mary (late Dino Finoro), Jeanette (late Don Shaver), Doreen (late Pete Stradiotto), Doll (Jay Fox) and the late Gloria and Ken MacKenzie. George will be greatly missed by his many nieces, nephews and friends in both Canada and Italy.
We would like to thank the nurses, PSW staff and Dr. Will Ruddock at the long-term care community of The Elliott who provided a comfortable home for George and always treated him with dignity and respect. The wonderful care they provided for George will always be remembered.
