Born in the town of Joka during very troubled times, Maria bravely escaped from Hungary during the Revolution of 1956 as a very young woman. With no promise of a better future on the other side of the ocean, she travelled to Canada, struggled and eventually prospered alongside other Hungarian-Canadians who had similar hopes of a safer life with opportunities for their children and generations to come. Maria met and married the love of her life, Joseph and made lifelong friends who she considered like family. She was a founding member of the Hungarian Canadian Club (Kossuth Hall) and spent many years as a proud, hardworking volunteer and organizer. They settled in Guelph in 1959, raising their children Joe (Helen) and Frances (Dino).
Her family always savoured her delicious Hungarian cooking, especially chicken paprikas and fried chicken (kirantott hus) and it wasn’t a party until her cheesies came out. Family always went home full and with a takeaway package to enjoy another day.
Known as Nagymama to her grandchildren, she relished in their accomplishments and milestones. Matthew (Sarah), Bryan (Jessica), David, Sabrina (Colin) will
all miss her dearly. Her great grandchildren were so very blessed to also have her in their lives. Nagymama celebrated many birthdays, special occasions and holidays with Mason, Bridget, Nora, Jack and Sasha.
Maria is predeceased by 2 brothers, 5 sisters and is survived by many nieces and nephews in Hungary.
She will be missed yet remembered fondly by her husband, family and many friends.
Nagymama, your light has dimmed, but it will continue to shine through us Csillag.
