Martina Petra Welten Goldsmith

Martina Petra Goldsmith - April 24/1949 to July 24/2021. An amazing, heroic person and partner of 35 years who bravely fought through lymphoma that should have been fatal in 2004. She received a bone marrow transplant from her sister Mia Delorme back then which was a lifesaver but complicated by significant GVHD with scleroderma that required 2 years of treatment every 2 weeks at TGH with photophoresis. Martina did well until she suffered a brainstem stroke in February, 2019. She eventually got home after 5 months in hospital and rehab; that was her only goal. She had huge deficits. In late 2019, she developed central respiratory failure and required a ventilator at night. She hated that and the hospital bed but knew she needed to persist. She was stubborn and willful and frequent negotiations were necessary to get her to stick with treatment. She knew if she ever went back to hospital she likely would never return home. She died of respiratory failure & pneumonia in hospital a day following her admission without regaining consciousness.

Martina is survived by sisters Mia Delorme, Ini Herron, Vicki Tichbourne and Jo-Anne Young. Predeceased by her eldest sister Nicky Renaud. She will be sadly missed by Martha and Gabby and Dr Robert Goldsmith. Cremation has taken place. As per Martina’s request there will be no memorial service.
