Passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener in his 92nd year. Loving husband of 60 years of the late Betty-Anne (2015). Beloved father of Karyn Davies (Brent), Kelly Farfaras (Tom) and Kristin Mirotta (Leo). Bill will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Emily Davies-Robinson (Ryan), Adam Davies, Erika Farfaras (Tyler), Julia Mirotta and Elizabeth Mirotta. Bill was the loving brother of the late Betty Aitken, the late Joan Pye, and is survived by his nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Bill received his BSA degree from the University of Toronto in 1954 at the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC). While studying for his MSA (’56), he met and married his wife, Betty-Anne. Following his time at OAC, Bill and his young family moved to Corvallis, Oregon where he worked as an irrigation scientist while completing his PhD (’64) in Soil & Water Resource Engineering from Oregon State University. In 1963, the Stammers family returned to Guelph where Bill accepted the position of Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the newly formed University of Guelph. He will be remembered by his former students for developing and teaching courses that provided the foundational skills and knowledge necessary to their future careers as engineers.
Bill's love of music was central to his life. He sang in the tenor section of the Harcourt Memorial United Church Choir and volunteered as Church Treasurer. Bill was also a long-time member of the Guelph Concert Band where he enjoyed playing in the brass section and volunteered as band treasurer.
After his retirement from the University of Guelph in 1988, Bill and Betty-Anne enjoyed travelling abroad, participating in social activities with their friends, and hosting family gatherings. In later years, Bill loved listening to his favourite jazz artists, reading and discussing current events, and spending time with his grandchildren.
