Alvin J. Noster, 85 years young, of Gurnee, Illinois unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, June 5th, 2025, at his home with his wife by his side. Alvin was born May 20th, 1940, in Elyria, Ohio to the late Alvin and Ethel Noster.
Alvin enjoyed playing school sports, especially baseball, football, and Golden Gloves boxing. At the age of 18, Alvin joined the Navy and proudly served as a submariner on the USS Sailfish SSR/SS 572 from 1959-1962. Afterwards, he moved to the North Side of Chicago and then settled down in the northern suburbs with his family. Alvin was an enthusiastic coach for youth baseball and speed skating. He was also an active board member and was instrumental in growing the Northbrook speed skating club where both of his sons skated. Alvin also devoted many late nights to make the outdoor rink at Meadow Hill Track in Northbrook.
Alvin worked at Washington National Insurance Company for many years where he made lifelong friends. After his retirement from Washington National, the company requested that he return to oversee the closing of the facility and “turn the lights off” for the last time.
Alvin’s greatest loves were his family, especially his loving wife, children, grandchildren, his dogs Ty and Sadie, his cabin in the woods near Antigo, Wisconsin, and being on the water. Alvin particularly liked being outside and enjoying nature, boating, fishing, hunting, and gardening. He also liked to spend his time watching sports on tv.
Alvin was a strong, gentle, compassionate individual who was loved by his family, friends, and former co-workers. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife Barbara, daughters Susan McLaughlin and Teresa Noster, sons John (Tracey) and Robert (Jackie) Noster, sisters Barbara Rankin and Sylvia Diederich, his 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
