

On January 5th, 2015 at 12:21 a.m., Ann went to be with her Lord and Savior at her home in Waukegan, IL, after falling on December 7, 2014 fracturing her hip and suffering a stroke the following day. Ann Hughes-Johnson, 89, was born in Charleston, WV on July 23, 1925. She graduated from Seminole High School in Sanford, FL in 1943. She received her B.S. degree in Chemistry from Stetson Univ. in 1949 majoring in both Math and Chemistry, her Masters of Education Cum Laude from National College of Education in 1964, and 62 hours towards her PhD in Math at Northwestern University. While at Stetson she was elected to the honorary Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Fraternity and while at Northwestern elected to the honorary education fraternity, Pi Lambda Theta. Ann retired in 1985 from an education career that spanned over 25 years, teaching at Commonwealth School (now Novak-King) in North Chicago, Beach Park Grade School, and the last 20 years at Waukegan High School. She also was a chemist for 1 year at Abbotts before going into teaching. Ann is survived by her loving husband of 18 years, Ralph Vincent Johnson of Waukegan, sons Michael (Connie) Hughes, Lake Helen, FL, David (Marilyn) Hughes, Grayslake, IL, Steven (Mary) Hughes, Excelsior, Minnesota and daughter Patricia Hughes of Waukegan, step-children Lynette (John) Carlson, Doug (Kathleen) Johnson, Cindy (Tim Kasper), 11 Grandchildren and 3 ½ Great-grandchildren and Sister-in-law, Liz Stine. Ann was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Judge John L. Hughes and Brother Al Stine, Anderson, S.C. Ann was very involved in the 1st Presbyterian Church of Waukegan, being an elder, deacon, singing in the Westminster Choir, and a Sunday school teacher and then subsequently very involved in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Waukegan, singing in the choir, serving on their Church Council and Women's Circle. Ann had such a strong love and devotion to God, Family, Community and Country, dedicating herself to numerous civic organizations such as Exchange Club, AAUW, Waukegan Township Supervisor, PEO, Women's Club, Girl Scouts of Americas, Swedish Glee Club, Waukegan Symphony Chorus, and numerous other bridge, golf, and community organizations. A Wake is scheduled for Friday, January 9th between 5 and 8 PM at Marsh Funeral Home, 305 N. Cemetery Road, Gurnee, IL. Funeral Services are scheduled for Saturday, January 10th at 11:00 AM with a viewing reception preceding at 10:00 AM. This celebration service of her life will be held at Trinity United Lutheran Church, 658 Grand Av., in Waukegan. Due to inclement weather a private interment will follow at North Shore Garden of Memories. A luncheon will be served at the Church following interment.
