Carolyn Maxwell Turnbull, age 89, of Green Oaks, IL passed away December 5, 2019 at Condell Hospital, Libertyville, IL. She was born October 5, 1930 in Milwaukee, WI to Marion Virginia Austin and William MacDonald Maxwell.
Carolyn grew up in Wauwatosa, WI, attended Wauwatosa H. S. and later graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in 1952. Carolyn then began teaching grammar school grades 5 & 6 and, some years later, taught Kindergarten. She also served as a volunteer member hostess with the USO of Milwaukee where she met her husband to be, a US Marine attending electronics school at Great Lakes NTC. After he returned home from serving in the Korean War with the U.S. Marine Corps, Carolyn married Gordon Wells Turnbull, Jr. on December 19, 1953 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Wauwatosa, WI.
In 1957, Carolyn, husband and first child moved to Libertyville, IL where they raised their family and have lived in the area ever since. While her four children were growing up as members of the Lake County 4H program in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s, Carolyn served as a 4H leader and later served on the 4H Horse Committee that governed the Lake County 4H Horse Program. Carolyn enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, bird watching and reading. As members of the Lake County Mounted Posse (horse club), she and her family enjoyed the family horses traveling to horse shows, trail rides and camping. Her special pleasure was 43 years of RV travel in the family motor home.
Carolyn is survived by her husband of 66 years, Gordon W. Turnbull, Jr., 4 children and 10 grandchildren. Sons: Gordon “Skip” W. Turnbull, III, and James Robert (Christina) Turnbull; daughters: Susan Caryl T. (Steven) Driggers and Rebecca Ann T. (Garry) Saul. Grandchildren: Tracy T. (Dillon) Blake; Shannon and Skyler Driggers; Dakota, Tanner, Tyler and Zoe Turnbull and Justin, Carter and Adam Saul. Great grandchildren:
Eliza Ann (deceased) & Emma Blake.
Visitation and memorial will be held December 21, 2019 between 10AM and 1PM at the Marsh Funeral Home, 305 N. Cemetery Rd., Gurnee, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are encouraged to be made to Wounded Warriors at USO.org, Save-A-Pet (Grayslake) http://saveapetil.org/donate/ or a charity of your choice.
