

Charles H. Brubeck of Wildwood in Grayslake, IL was born June 4, 1941 in Charleston, West Virginia to the late Hatfield (Zip) and Louise (nee Lewis) Brubeck and passed away August 9, 2013 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL surrounded by his loving family. Charles was raised in very rural Wayne County, West Virginia and described it as a “young man’s paradise” where he worked on local farms and hunted in the fall, often starting at the kitchen door. He graduated from Marshall High School and attended Marshall College (now Marshall University) for two years. He then joined the United States Navy where he spent the next 27 years as an electronics technician. He served all over the world with 15 years overseas including 3 tours in Vietnam. While in the Navy, he furthered his education by graduating from several colleges, Big Bend Community College (Associates Degree), University of New York (Bachelor’s Degree), Southern Illinois University (Bachelor’s Degree - Summa Cum Laude) and Northern Illinois University (Masters Degree). He retired from the Navy as a Master Chief Electronics Technician (E-9). After the Navy, he taught Electronics Repair, Industrial Systems Repair and Computer Repair at the Lake County Area Vocational Center for 13 years retiring in 2005. Charles met his wife Mary at a college reunion on a blind date. Not knowing that Mary was his date, he saw her standing and being a gentleman,he got up and gave her his seat. He told the person who set up the blind date that he had met someone and didn’t need the blind date. That person told him Mary was his blind date and it was “love at first sight”. Charles is survived by his wife Mary, a retired school teacher, (formerly Mary Elizabeth Ray of Ona, West Virginia), four daughters, Greta (Sven) Gosnell of Fairfax, Virginia, Rebecca (Matthew) Richards of Champaign, Maria (David) Palumbo of Barrington and Virginia Brubeck of Gurnee, his grandchildren Sarah, Eleanor, Charles, Tristan, Johnny, A.J. and Leah and his sister Ann (Eric) Hogan of Baton Rouge, Lousiana. He was preceded in death by his brother Hatfield (Nid) Brubeck Jr. Visitation will be Tuesday August 13, 2013 from 3-8 PM at Marsh Funeral Home 305 Cemetery Road Gurnee and on Wednesday August 14 from 10:00 AM until time of funeral service 11:00 A M at Wildwood Presbyterian Church 18630 Old Gages Lake Road in Grayslake. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
