Glenn Antony Ferruzzi came into this world in Kenosha Wisconsin on April 12, 1928. He passed away at home in Waukegan on December 10, 2021 at the age of 93. He was the only child of John and Anna (Giuli) Ferruzzi.
Glenn spent his early years in Wisconsin. He graduated from Wauwatosa High School, received his Bachelor degree in Education from Milwaukee State Teachers' College (now University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and his Master's degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. After teaching a year in Portland Oregon, he arrived in Waukegan to begin his 34-year teaching career at former West Elementary School. When Daniel Webster Junior High was built, he opened the science department in that facility. Most of his career was spent at Webster, except for a few years at Thomas Jefferson Junior High. He was a devoted and beloved science teacher. His former students still remember him for his creative experiments, such as the classroom volcano, and his static electricity, hair-raising experiments, among many others. He received a National Science Foundation award for excellence in teaching.
In 1953, he married Barbara McLay in Milwaukee and they settled in Waukegan, where they raised their three children, Lynne, John and Robert. Barbara passed away in 1987.
Glenn was a founding member and Chairman of the Building Committee at Faith Methodist Church on McAree Rd. in Waukegan. He was a very active member of that community, singing in the choir, maintaining the property and working at the annual summer fundraiser, cooking chicken all day. He aided the Rev. Ralph Smith, pastor of the church at that time, establish the Lake County Chaplaincy Used Book Store and Food Pantry. After his retirement from teaching, he continued to volunteer at the bookstore until it closed. He then transferred his passion for books to the Friends of The Waukegan Public Library, where he worked tirelessly as a volunteer.
Glenn served in the US Army Reserve for 10 years, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.
He spent the first ten years of his retirement operating his painting and home repair business-a type of work enjoyed. It was in this capacity that he was hired to do painting and repairs at the home of Margaret Stanczak O'Brien, a widow. They struck up a friendship, and this grew into a relationship that resulted in their marriage in 1991.
Glenn was a man of many interests. He loved music of all kind, dancing, reading military history, geography, gardening, and political discussions. He and Marge traveled extensively in many countries: Ireland, Spain, Greece, Italy, France, England, Holland, Belgium and Eastern Europe. Many of his happiest moments were spent in these travels. Glenn was an avid accumulator of stuff of all kinds. He always said he was an "accumulator", not a collector.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marge and his three children Lynne (Andrew) Angelos, John(Anne Rafelson) Ferruzzi and Robert (Melody) Ferruzzi. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Melissa (Eric) Anderson, William (Kirsten Johnson) Flegal, and Jake, Erin, Alex, (Breanna)Cooper and Paxton Ferruzzi. Also surviving him are four great-grandchildren Sophia, Nolan and Jonah Anderson, and Samuel Flegal. Other survivors include his two step-daughters Jean (Patrick) Gibbons and Maureen (Wesley) Ward and step-grandchildren Jacqueline and Rosemary Gibbons and Julia Ward.
In fulfilment of his wishes, services will be private, for family only, with the Reverend Alva Caldwell presiding.
