Harold E. Vollmer, 82 years old of Gurnee, Illinois, passed away on October 12, 2025. He was born on September 10, 1943 in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of Edward and Dorothy Vollmer. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Cribb) Vollmer of 56 years, two children, Mark (Sonya) Vollmer of Fort Myers, Florida and Stefanie (Steven) Myllymaki of Thiensville, Wisconsin, two grandchildren, Mark (Madison) Vollmer II of Ankeny, Iowa, Andie Vollmer of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, one brother, Bill (Linda) Vollmer of St. James City, Florida and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was sadly preceded in death by his sister, Diane Becker and one son, Harold Edward Vollmer, Jr. (JR).
Harold was raised in Waukegan, Illinois. After graduation in 1962 from WTHS, he worked at Great Lakes Naval Base. In 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Platoon 2025. On April 26, 1969, he was married to Linda by his brother-in-law, Harold Cribb, and Dr. G. Devore at the First United Methodist Church in Waukegan, Illinois. After he retired from the Naval Base, he continued working as a barber at local shops.
Harold’s love of bowling started when his father took him bowling at Bob O’Farrell’s bowling alley in Waukegan. He also worked there as a pin setter (days prior to automatic bowling pin setting). Harold continued to bowl for his entire life. He was a member of the United States Bowling Congress for 30 years. Harold’s games and series included (2) 300, (3) 299, (2) 11 strikes in a row, placed second in Lake County Doubles and his highest average was 218. He was honored in the Greater Lake County Hall of Fame 2022 as a Super Senior Bowler of the Year.
Harold also enjoyed golf, cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packers, and walking with the Gurnee retired walkers every morning at the local mall. His biggest joys were fishing up north at his vacation home on High Lake in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin and vacationing with his family. Harold wanted to be on the lake as much as possible, and was always telling fish stories which could rarely be verified.
To honor Harold, services will be held on October 19, 2025 at Marsh Funeral Home in Gurnee, Illinois with visitation starting at noon and services to follow at 2 pm.
In remembrance of Harold’s life, the family would appreciate donations to the American Heart Association in his honor.
