March 28, 1932 – July 23, 2025
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Mary Ann Griffin, a cherished educator, devoted friend, and beloved member of the community. Mary Ann was born on March 28, 1932, in Los Angeles, California. Over the years, she made her home in various places before settling in the Waukegan and Grayslake areas of Illinois.
Mary Ann dedicated over 30 years of her life to teaching first grade in the Lake Forest School District, where she touched countless young lives with her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to education. Her excellence in the classroom was recognized with numerous honors, including being named Teacher of the Year for the state of Illinois. Even after retirement, her passion for teaching endured as she continued to inspire children through lessons in science, music, and math at the Lake Forest Hospital’s day care center.
Affectionately known to many as “The Story Lady,” Mary Ann was a gifted storyteller whose tales captivated generations. She loved animals and she found great joy and companionship in the many dogs and cats she cared for throughout her life.
Mary Ann is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Ellen Griffin. She also leaves behind a legacy of kindness, mentorship, and service. Whether through her involvement in charitable causes, her role as an “adopted” great-grandmother, or simply as a loyal friend, Mary Ann made a lasting impact on all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any charity.
