

Sallie Rose Gilmore Roniss, 83, of Gurnee, Illinois, passed away on August 29, 2026. Born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, she studied at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Allen Roniss; her daughter, Quimby Wysokinski (Ted), her grandchildren, Samual and Eva and her brother William Gilmore. She was preceded in death by Rosella Roble, Dale Gilmore, Kay Accord, and Liz Svec.
Sallie was a Chicago artist, teacher, and world traveler whose work was shaped by her early exposure to indigenous art and her journeys through Papua New Guinea, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Yemen, and beyond. Her vibrant, textured art and her decades of teaching left a lasting mark on the Chicago's creative community.
She will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and spirited curiosity. She made strangers feel like friends and friends feel like family. Her legacy lives on in her art, in her family, and in the countless lives she brightened simply being Sallie.
