Sixto Hernandez

Sixto Hernandez was born March 28, 1938 in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico to Angel Hernandez and Virginia Camacho. He grew up enjoying his family and his time in the countryside riding horses. He loved nature. He always fed the birds and was especially fond of cardinals. At a young age, he went to work to support his family when his father’s health deteriorated. In search of opportunities Sixto moved to Waukegan, Illinois April 21, 1952. He stayed with Miguel and Tomasa Camacho and their sons Miguel, Wilfredo, and Jose. Sixto helped at Camacho’s grocery store. Sixto and Miguel/Pappo developed a lifelong friendship. Pappo was the brother my father never had, and he was a loyal friend to the end. Sixto met his future wife Marcela Hernandez through her brother Tony Cintron. They were married October 27, 1962, at St. Joseph church with dear friends Carmen and Oscar Torres by their sides.

Sixto was an avid sports fan. His favorite team was the NY Yankees, and he also enjoyed the Cubs and the Bears. In his younger days he liked to fish. He loved music. He was a talented acoustic guitar and quatro player. He and my mother always had a bountiful garden full of flowers, fruits and vegetables. After his retirement from Abbott, he started volunteering at Most Blessed Trinity Food Pantry.

Sixto is survived by his daughter Annette (fiancée Jim Anderson); grandchildren Christopher, Nicholas and Matthew Teaney and Daniel and Amy Hernandez; siblings Irene Hernandez Perez, Regina Hernandez, Julia Hernandez and Angela Hernandez Fisher.

Sixto was predeceased by his wife Marcela, their son Daniel Hernandez and his sisters Ana Maria Hernandez, Ana Luisa Hernandez, Teresa Hernandez, Maria Virginia Hernandez, and Evelyn Hernandez.

The visitation will be held on Thursday, August 20 from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Marsh Funeral Home, 305 N Cemetery Rd, Gurnee IL.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, August 21 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Church 450 Keller Ave, Waukegan, IL 60085, followed by interment at Ascension Catholic Cemetery.
