Al always was very sociable and made friends wherever he went. He many times cheered up my day when we accidentally bumped in to each other at one of the local parks...

Looking back more than 60 years ago, Alan and I were best friends. We lived next door to one another from our very first days until middle school. Our mothers even put us in the same playpen ( yes, play pens were quite acceptable then — no felony as it probably is today!). We did everything together. Board games were a favorite and I always marveled at how his family had all of the pieces of Chutes and Ladders, Life, Parcheesi, and of course , Monopoly.  Card games of go fish, Rummy, Old Maid, or Battle/War kept us busy many a rainy day.  
Alan taught me how to ride a two wheeler and let me borrow his bicycle to try out on the street once I mastered riding on the backyard lawn (not so easy). 
Alan’s dad had an amazing miniature train village set up in the basement. Alan and I were sometimes permitted to use it. It was cool. It even had stockyards with little cattle that would line up and enter the stock cars! It had a locomotive which blew smoke, it had draw bridges. 

Outside we spent many happy hours climbing  trees.  Our friend, Skip, was  always part of our fun.   We loved trying to build “go carts” out of 2 x 4’s and old metal roller skates or carriage wheels the guys found at the dumps. These carts didn’t get far before falling apart, but we kept at. 

When we were 13, both of our families moved away — not far — just on the opposite side of  town, but it was enough to go to separate schools.  The families stayed close for many more years, but as all things in life, things changed.  We found different interests in high school, then college and sadly drifted apart.   But Alan will forever be that handsome 8 year old who was my very best friend.
