Demetro Russell Havriliak

Demetro R. Havriliak, born January 8, 1946, in Passaic, New Jersey, passed away surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He was raised with his sister Sonia Bedsworth by their loving parents, Demetro and Helen in Garfield, New Jersey. And later moved to East Rutherford in 1970, where he built a beautiful life and family.

Known by everyone as “Meet”, he was the beloved husband of his high school sweetheart, Arlene (née VanNess), with whom he shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. He was a devoted father to his son, Adam, and his wife, Meghan, and was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Moran. A true fighter, Jennifer faced her long battle with Lupus with incredible strength and resilience.

Demetro was a delighted grandfather to Stephen Moran and his wife, Jessica; Lisa Sanchez and her husband Kevyn, and Nicolette Havriliak. He was also a cherished great-grandfather to Grace, Cameron, and Roman. He’d happily talk about the achievements of every one of his grandchildren and great grandchildren with all of his friends. He is also survived by his cousins Joanne, James, his godchild Katie and her husband, Kevin, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him dearly.

After proudly serving his country in the United States Army, he worked for Western Union for 25 years. Since his youth, “Meet” would sometimes help at the local funeral home, so when it came time to choose a second career, he naturally chose the funeral business. He excelled at comforting families at their most difficult moments, and they appreciated his genuine kindness and empathy.

Music was an important part of Demetro's life. Along with his best friend and cousin, Russ Havriliak he started the doo-wop group The Computones, creating memories and music that remained close to his heart. He especially loved Christmas music and all things Christmas. He’d proudly make his “Famous Christmas Dip” every year and made sure everyone had some.

Always willing to lend a helping hand, he was someone people could count on. His warmth, generosity, humor, and love for his family and friends touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Demetro leaves behind a lifetime of love, laughter, music, service, and cherished memories. His legacy will live on through his family, the countless people he helped, and all those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
