Donald Vinik, 94, died at his residence in Boca Raton, Florida on November 10th. Donald was the beloved father of Paula Doggart, Bruce Vinik (Ginny Levin), Andrea Hess and Jeffrey Vinik (Penny); loving stepfather of Randi Lenahan (Bill), Debra Frank (Warren) and Craig Silverman (Chae). He was the adored grandfather of Jennifer Butenas (Mark), Annie Vinik (Jamie Lawrence), Jessie Vinik (Drew Sunderland), Danny Vinik (Cate), Jared Vinik, Kyra Vinik, Joshua Vinik, Shawn Aronoff (Bree), Daniel Aronoff, (Mallory), Corey Aronoff, Skylar Aronoff, Shane Lenahan and Meghan Lenahan. Donald had the great delight of being the great grandfather to Zac, Ben, Emilee, Perry, Ellie, Reed, Theo and Aria. He also leaves behind his loving niece, Ann Friedlander.
Donald was the cherished husband of Edna Vinik and Joan Vinik, both of whom predeceased him.
Donald was born in 1927 in Jersey City, New Jersey to Miriam and Julius Vinik. He was the younger brother of Helen Eisenberg. He served in the Navy during World War II and was training to take part in the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He was a proud engineering graduate of the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken New Jersey. After working for the David Cronheim Company in the commercial real estate business, he changed careers to become a specialist with Henderson Brothers on the New York Stock Exchange. Donald was a member of the NYSE for more than 25 years and inducted into the Buttonwood Club for his long tenure.
Donald and Edna moved from New Jersey to South Florida in the 1970’s where he continued to be an active investor and served on the boards of several banks. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Stevens Institute of Technology.
After Edna’s death in 1984, Donald married Joan and lived happily in Boca Grove in Boca Raton for the rest of his years. He remained an active securities trader until the end.
Along with his parents and sister, Donald was active in Jewish philanthropies in the US and Israel, especially Hebrew University where he helped endow a teaching chair in mathematics.
A competitive sailor in his earlier days, Donald began to ride a Harley in his 70’s and enjoyed long trips, visiting family and seeing the country. His real love was flying. He held a pilot’s license for more than 70 years and flew solo into his late 80’s. His flying adventures took him, Joan, family and friends on adventures throughout the United States, Europe and South America. A few of his grandchildren were even willing passengers. Donald was an avid and popular member of the Boca Raton Pilots Association for many years.
Donald was a generous father and grandfather and loyal friend, loved by everyone who knew him. His intellectual curiosity and opinions about economics, politics, inventions, ham radio, cars, planes, sports—whatever interested him—made him a great person to listen to. He believed strongly in fairness in his personal and business life and in social justice for the country.
The family is deeply grateful for the many years of devoted service of his caregiver Jocelyne Destines who kept him running and allowed him to remain happily at home. Special thanks to Clorinda Dalfo, who also played a key role in the Vinik household.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.guttermanandmusicant.com for the Vinik family.
