
Dr. Gary Neal Fields, age 81, passed away on July 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, devotion, and love that will be remembered by all who knew him. Gary was born on March 6,1945, to the late Leo and Caroline Fields. He was raised in the Bronx, New York and graduated from Bronx High School of Science. He went on to attend Carleton College at the ripe age of 16 and later attended the University of Rochester Medical School. It was during his internship when he met the love of his life, Rachelle, when mutual friends set them up on a blind date. Their chance meeting blossomed into a lifelong love story when they were married on August 8, 1971.
As an internist and gastroenterologist, Gary dedicated his life to caring for people and supporting families throughout his community. Known for his kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit, he touched countless lives through both his medical practice and his genuine concern for others. To many, he was more than a doctor, he was a trusted friend, mentor, and source of comfort during life’s most important moments.
While Gary was deeply committed to his profession, his greatest devotion was always to his family. He and Rachelle’s 55-year marriage was an example of true love, partnership, commitment, and unwavering support for one another. Gary took immense pride in watching his children, Jennifer and Lauren, grow and his love for his one and only grandson was boundless - a devotion that filled him with joy beyond measure. He was especially proud when his grandson decided to follow in his footsteps, attending his alma mater for college.
Gary was happiest at home, especially when he was reading his books, eating pretzels, or listening to music. These simple moments brought him deep contentment and reflected the quiet joys that meant the most to him.
Gary will be remembered for his generosity, his wisdom, his dedication to his patients, sense of humor and above all, his unwavering love for his family. His presence enriched the lives of countless people, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Gary is survived by his wife, Rachelle Fields of Florida, their two children, Jennifer Cook and her fiancé, Dr. Oved Fattal of California, Lauren Fields and her fiancé, Brett Bourbeau of Connecticut, Wendy Weissman (his honorary child) and her husband Keith Dalton of New Jersey, and his beloved grandson, Caden Cook.
He also leaves behind his sister, Marilyn Soloway, sister-in-law, Robin Poplowitz, three nephews and their families, along with dear cousins and friends.
