The Pharmacy world misses a true leader,
innovator, and mentor to many still practicing. Gil has left his imprint on us.

I'm sorry to hear that Gil has passed away.  You are all in my prayers.

Gil was the greatest leader I ever worked with and a  giant among all those in the pharmacy profession.  He was a visionary and passionate about patient care and the need to train managers for future health care systems long before it was considered fashionable.  Most importantly, Gil managed to touch my heart and enrich the  lives of those he met.   I will always miss him, am grateful for all he taught me and am very fortunate to have known him.  My deepest condolences go out to his beloved wife and family.

So sorry for your loss. Gil was an extraordinary man and professional. God bless him in Heaven.

I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Gil. He was an awesome co-worker and a great teacher. He was such a beautiful person. He always had a smile; he was the sunshine of the pharmacy. He was one of the few people in the pharmacy that would always greet you in the morning as you walk in the door and also at the end of the workday. One day, I was in the break room with him and he spent his entire lunch break on the phone with someone just talking about his grandchildren. You could tell he was an incredible, loving family man. I sat there missing my own grandpa and wishing my own children had one just like Gil. I am saddened that you're gone "Gilster", but I know they called you home because they needed a grandpa up there like you. They took away our "Sunshine", but your warmth we will always remember. Til we meet again, Gily.

Gil was the first serious mentor I had in my Pharmacy career (Lenox Hill Hospital) and always thought very highly of him both professionally and personally. I still mention him to people to this day and he will always be in my thoughts.

Gilbert I. Simon, Sc.D.
September 23, 1934 - April 19, 2014 
A pioneer in hospital pharmacy.

From 1961-1982 Dr. Gilbert I. Simon was director if the Department of Pharmacy at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City. He also served as director of Pharmacy at Beth Israel Medical Center NY, Lincoln Medical Center NY, and several expanding hospital and rehabilitation facilities in Las Vegas NV.

Dr. Simon received his B.S. from Fordham University; his M.S. from Long Island University; his Doctorate, Honoris Causa from the college of Pharmacy Sciences, City of New York at Columbia University; and his MPA in Health from Pace University. He was associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at Columbia University from 1964 to 1976. Dr Simon served as president of both the New York State Council of Hospital Pharmacists and the New York City Society of Hospital Pharmacists. In 1973 he was honored with the Award of Merit for his contribution to the practice of institutional pharmacy. He was a member of the Pharmacy Advisory Committee of the Greater New York Hospital Association and the NY State Governer's medical committee.

Throughout his career Dr. Simon innovated several practices which have become standard in hospital pharmacy including, Unit Dose, computerization, strip packaging and drug delivery, clinical drug information systems, and several others.

Dr. Simon was an international consultant for the pharmaceutical industry, publishers, advertising agencies and the government. He was a principal speaker and educator throughout the U.S. and Europe.

In 1975 Dr. Simon co-authored MED FILE, a book on common non-prescription drugs and their interactions. In 1979 he co-authored “The Pill Book” the most widely used illustrated guide to prescription drugs in the United States, which is still updated and widely in print today.

I will never forget the support and kindness Gil showed me over the years. He was a great mentor and I will never forget him.
