Gloria B Cherry

May 7, 1935June 4, 2021

Gloria Barry Cherry, 86, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday June 4, 2021. She was an example to all who knew her – of elegance, style, and intelligence. A role model, she attended Barnard College and Columbia Law School ( LLB, ‘58) during an era when few women pursued law degrees. A steadfast advocate for women’s rights, she was active in local politics, the Board of Education, and the League of Women Voters. While she maintained a full career as a practicing trial attorney, family remained her priority. She raised four daughters, hosted warm holiday gatherings and maintained a beautiful home filled with family photographs including her eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Jules Lazar. She will always be remembered and loved by her daughters Sabrina, Dana, Pamela, and Cara, her stepson Ben, sons-in-law Marc, Paul, Mike and Jonathan, and grandchildren Rebecca, Ruth, William, Sarah, Hannah, Isabela, Julian, and Anya.

have a memory or condolence to add?

Sending our condolences to the extended family. A contemporary of our parents, Gloria was sort of the ‘RBG of Tenafly’ in a way — a revered, strong and well-respected leader in the community.
We so appreciate all that she did for the town— and that she & Jules sold her beloved house to us 20 years ago! When we catch up with old friends from Tenafly and they ask us where we now live—we always respond by saying “The Cherry House.”
May she Rest In Peace. We will remember her fondly.

Dear Sabrina, Pamela, Dana ,Cara and Ben,

As you know your mom was as close to me as a sister.

I am glad that you all got to be with her and I got to see her with Linda.

She was proud of all of you and the grand children and we spent so many hours over lunch and dinner sharing stories over the years of your accomplishments.

You more than anyone know how much I will miss her.

May she always be with you in your heart and in your memories.
Thankfully, I have so many pictures to remember her .
She will live on with me forever.

Much love,
Aunt Arline

Dear Sabrina , Pamela, Cara and Dana,

My early memories are of the “”Cherry” family, specifically Aunt Gloria and her girls .
Spending time at the first house in Tenafly- then the house on the hill , on Stanton.
I remember as far back as going with my brothers to the Carolinas when your dad was in the Air Force to visit - and all of us going to sleep together.

Our moms had one of those unique and precious friendships dating back to high school. Going through good and bad times always being there for each other.

I know all of your wonderful times together, and your great memories and pictures will help sustain you during this challenging period.

May her life be a blessing to all who loved her.

Gloria and I had many connections on various Bears Nest committees as well as sharing many years in our great BN Book Club. Her intelligence and analytical abilities were admired by everyone.
Beyond that, she brought her life experiences to so many discussions. It was obvious to all of us in the neighborhood that she loved her daughters very much and that she had raised them to be just as independent and successful as was she.
I will miss her warmth and her "no nonsense" approach to life.
