Irwin Levenson - On December 5, 2019, surrounded by loving family, Irwin Levenson died peacefully at age 89. He had lived a long and vigorous life, and his passing was swift and painless. A man who had always planned on never getting old almost never did.
Born the eldest son of an eldest son, Irwin was raised playing stickball on the streets of the Bronx with friends with whom he would remain close for life. At 18 he met Vivienne Goldman, and they married over a long weekend during a furlough while he served in the United States Army. Stationed in Germany in 1952, Vivienne joined him and they began their world travels. Their marriage was a source of inspiration, lasting 67 years. He graduated from CCNY with a BS degree and later earned a masters from CCNY. He worked in finance, but hated life as an accountant. In the 1960’s he found his life’s work as a math teacher at Kakiat Jr. High School in Spring Valley, New York, where he worked until retiring. In retirement, he tutored Math to college students at Rockland Community College, New York.
Irwin is survived by his wife, Vivienne Levenson and children Ellen Sonkin, Jeffrey and Ilene Levenson and Howard and Lois Levenson. He was a loving grandfather to Jessica and Adam Handelman, Annie Levenson and Peter Ganong, Brian, Eric, Nicole, Emily, and Lexi Levenson. He was a great-grandfather (GG) to Layla and Olivia Handelman and Ruth Levenson and Benjamin Ganong. He is also survived by his sister Carol Sussman and brother Leonard Levenson. He will be remembered for the kindness and warmth he radiated, for the smile that met stranger and friend alike with sincerity and genuine interest, and for the laughter that filled each room he entered.
Donations in his memory may be made to SEE International, Meals on Wheels in Bergen County NJ or the ACLU.
