Cantor Philip Sherman, help us with the Brit of our grandson Gabriel some 9 years ago, during the most difficult time for my daughter Sarah, would not take payment from her nor from me, he was a lamesvanik and a tzadik. May his soul rest in peace and my his family be comfort among the  mourners of Tzion and Jerusalem!

Cantor Sherman performed his services with dignity and levity for 5 of our grandchildren.   One consistency was his encouragement for families to not neglect the gathering in good times.  Something none of us forgot and continue to live by.  He was a blessing.

I have had the pleasure and honor of knowing him for a good 40+ years on the Upper West Side and as fellow chazan/baal tefilah.

My family  had the  honor of Cantor Sherman performing  our 4 grandsons' Bris Milahs, the oldest, now 12, and the youngest, twins, born prematurely during COVID, now 3. He was the the kindest, most professional man, making a solemn, traditional ceremony, into a lighthearted and wonderful celebration. We Zoomed the twins' bris and, as Cantor Philip did when with an audience, held the babies up to the computer audience to see how beautiful and healthy they were after the circumcision.  All 4 of them knew their Bar Mitzvah dates before they were able to crawl! I know what this disease can do, as my mother succumbed to it as well. Cantor Sherman's Legacy will be with a multitude of generations, due to iPhones, for a long time . Our sincere condolences to you and your beautiful family.

Dear Reuven and Sherman family,  I was honored and humbled to meet your Dad last Sunday.  After hearing and reading about what an incredible human being he was I felt blessed.  He  surely fought with Courage , Dignity and Faith to the end and  it was so inspiring. You took amazing care of him with devotion, compassion and love. You gave him such a gift in his  final journey.

I had the privilege of growing up with Phil in Syracuse and Dewitt, NY. He always was both a fun person and a very deep young man. We had many talks about Judaism and torah, which neither of us knew much about. 

Over the years our paths diverged and seperated in many ways. I went on to become a Rabbi in Canada and fill went to NYC.

We were rarely, but occasionally in touch and, of course, I remember his family well. Having grown up a block or two apart from each other, we knew each others families and the lifestyles they gave us.

Both of us turned towards Judaism, moved away from Syracuse in the 1970's but never "moved on". 

He was a lovely person, a seeker, an amazingly talented person in everything he did.

I am sorry that years and space kept us apart physically, but I always admired him in both his and my life pursuits.

I am a better person for him and I hope that in both of our life searches, he felt somewhat the same of me.

I never met his wife and children, I knew his parents well,  I am sure as Phil and I were born the same year and went to Hebrew School and youth groups together, that you had many great years with him.
Certainly two few, but I am sure that they were years filled with love, laughter and light. I won't forget him. He had an effect on me and while I may have had on him, I doubt it was equal. He excelled at all he did and did it with humour.

May we all be consoled among the mourners of Jerusalem & Zion.

An unfathomable loss. He conducted tens of thousands of brit milot but he made each one feel unique. I have planted trees in Israel through Jewish National Fund-USA so that his legacy will live on for generations. 

I have " known" Cantor Sherman for many many years because I am a pediatrician and he the best Mohel . His work was genuinely brilliant and he was kind to those he served. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He will be deeply missed

I am very saddened to hear this news. I had met Cantor Sherman a couple of times at friends Brits. He was a warm and genuine gentle giant and I know he's going to be sorely missed.

I have fond memories of our childhood days at Temple Beth El in Syracuse.  We were not in the same grade or public school but spent many hours in Young Judea together and traveled to Israel in the same group.  Facebook enabled us to reconnect and I saw the joy he took in spending time with his family.  His annual Super Bowl photo made me laugh.  May his memory always be a blessing.  Baruch Dayan ha emet.

I have known Phil since we attended Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School. His mother. Malvena z"l was one of the best Sunday School teachers at Temple Adath Yeshurun and an outstanding English teacher at Jamesville-DeWitt High School. Phil was in Concert Choir and Select Choir. He was also an actor on some nationally known sit-coms. A good friend, Shomer Shabbos and a true mensch. Condolences to the Sherman family. It is devistating when one loses a contrmporary. His bsme will forever be for a blessing.

Heartfelt condolences to the family on the terrible loss of Cantor Sherman. He was the mohel for all my grandsons. His warmth, his smile, grace and wit combined with his absolute professionalism made him the first person on so many families' bris guest list.  He will be greatly missed by a gigantic number of people who are not related to him, but still thought of him as family. May God comfort the entire family along with mourners of Zion and Israel.

A wonderful person whom it was a privilege to know.  He will be sorely missed by many of us at Lincoln Square Synagogue and other locales. 

So sad and shocked at the loss of your Abba/Zaidie. We grew up together in Syracuse.
