He was the youngest of eight and kindest to many.
He was a generous and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, and father figure. He was also a friend, a referee, an umpire, and the best card sender.
He was born in the Bronx NY and lived with his 4 brothers and 3 sisters on St. Ann’s Avenue with only one bathroom! He raised his family in Bergenfield NJ and later moved to NC with Sue where they made many friends. Then later, they moved back to Bergenfield to be closer to our growing family.
He served in the Marines and remained a proud soldier and American. He taught us to stand at the National Anthem, have pride in our country and love our family.
He taught us that Christmas is for kids and for enjoying Grandma’s and then his delicious shortie cookies. He brought great joy and wonder as Santa for his children and grandchildren, at schools, for neighbors, the Jaycees, and the Elks where he is a past Exalted Ruler.
He always gave you a sense of security. No matter where you went or what happened, you knew that he had always been there waiting patiently and ready to step in when you needed him. This security not only gave you comfort but also allowed you to stand on your own.
He was a sharp dresser. He loved America, egg creams, cats, fresh tomatoes, Sue’s cooking and being a Masterson. He loved a good joke and fun games…especially at Christmas.
He was a leader in life just like he danced. You knew that he held you and would guide you along to the music without stepping on your toes.
He was predeceased by his son Bobby (Robert G. Masterson, Jr.). He leaves behind his loving family: wife Sue Masterson; daughters Lil Masterson Kirk (Robby), Patty Lou Smith and Renee Masterson-Carr (Eddie); brothers Jim Masterson and Joe Masterson (Harriett) and sister Dotsy Hoffman; grandchildren Kristin Hayward (Kenny), Gregory Smith (Ali), Amanda Smith, Nathan Lavallen and Kerry Kirk; and his great-grandchildren Peyton, Trey, Hunter, and Kent Robert Hayward and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends for an Irish wake on Saturday January 28 from 4pm-9pm at Tommy Fox’s Public House 32 S Washington Ave, Bergenfield, NJ 07621. Please come by to toast, and share some stories, laughter and love.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.guttermanandmusicant.com for the Masterson family.
