Robert A. Posner, 91, of Teaneck, and formerly of Tenafly, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Robert (Bob) was preceded in death by his spouse, Rita Greenberg, and parents Benjamin and Viola. Bob is survived by his sons Daniel and Steven, sister Dodi, grandchildren Jacob, Max, Zoe, Guilia and Matteo, and nephews Pierre, Ted and Rick.
Bob was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He and his beloved partner Rita together took great pride in watching their children and grandchildren grow and thrive over the years.
Growing up in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, NY, Bob graduated from New Rochelle High School, where he won a Westinghouse Science Scholarship and a scholarship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He graduated from MIT in 1955 with a degree in building engineering and construction.
After college and completing training as an ROTC cadet, Bob served in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany and Turkey. In Turkey, Bob was tasked with building a new U.S. Army base in Sinop designed to monitor Soviet missile launches during the Cold War. He designed the buildings, hired local labor, acquired building materials and oversaw all construction.
Following his military service, Bob joined his father’s construction business and then went on to a long and successful career as a construction engineer, working for Blitman Construction, Taylor Woodrow Construction and other prominent construction firms in New York. He later worked as an engineering consultant.
Bob was also a public servant, volunteering his time to serve for years as the Chairman of the Tenafly Planning Board, overseeing land use and development in the borough.
Outside of family and work, Bob loved food, travel, sailing and classical music. As a teenager in Westchester, he worked as a deckhand on yachts on the Long Island Sound, an experience that instilled a life-long passion for sailing that he shared with family and friends. His love of music led him to attend hundreds of symphonies and performances. He also sang as a member of the New York Choral Society for more than 30 years, performing regularly in front of packed audiences at Carnegie Hall and on live television for major events.
Bob was an amazing person. He will be missed by all who knew him.
