Sherley Teitell, longtime resident of Fort Lee and formally of Closter, NJ passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026 at the age of 101, surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband and soulmate of 40+ years, Sidney, who died in 1990.
Born June 6, 1924, to Sue and Max Lazarus in Brooklyn, NY, she graduated from James Madison High School, and Hunter College, later working in Macy's in Herald Square where she met her future husband, Sidney. In the women’s ready-to-wear retail business for over 35 years, she was a fashionista half a century before the word even existed. Together they owned Gail Brown in West New York, NJ and The Clothes Tree in Tenafly, NJ.
An avid world traveler touching all seven continents, lifelong reader of the NY Times until she could no longer see the print. Fiercely independent, Sherley persevered later in life, still driving into NYC at age 94, holding true to her Brooklyn-born liberal values. She will be missed by her family and the many friends, both near and far, she made through her long, fulfilled life. We thank her caregiver Clara Castro for her loving support over the past 5 years.
Beloved mother of Todd (Betsy), of Dallas, TX, and Glen (Susan Warren), of Closter, NJ, grandmother of Jennifer Teitell, Brian(Alana) Teitell, Heather (Grant) Frankfurt, Cortney (Anthony Rudick) Teitell, and Daniel (Erica) Teitell, and proud great-grandmother of Holland, Lennon, Hill, Birdie, Hudson, and Sloane.
Funeral services will be held at Cedar Park Cemetery Chapel in Paramus, NJ on Sunday, January 4 at 1:15 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sherley’s memory to The American Cancer Society or Planned Parenthood.
