Bert Walker
On November 9, after a well lived life of 91 years, our dad, grandpa, uncle, and friend, passed away. Likely he is, at this moment, dancing to Heart and Soul with Pat, his much loved and much missed life partner of 56 years who passed in 2011.
As many can attest, his interests were diverse and wide ranging, as were the multitude of friends that he has gathered along the way. (Dad was a master at making friends). In his work life, he started as an engineer in training in the aviation industry, working with A.V. Roe, and then spent the rest of his career in construction and mining. Outside of work, he loved carpentry, gardening, model boat building, skiing, sailing, cottages in the summer, and travel. He was a lifelong learner, curious about pretty much every subject, and loved to share what he knew. In recent years he discovered an aptitude for writing and set about documenting various aspects of his life over the past 91 years.
Dad moved to Halifax from Toronto in 2011, and in addition to taking up drumming and guitar, charming the ladies, honing his cribbage skills, and joining the South Shore Ship Modellers Guild, he became a volunteer with HMCS Sackville. It was clear that he loved being part of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, becoming an integral member of their team as a Trustee, authoring The Way of a Ship, and giving presentations on the Battle of the Atlantic across the province. He was so proud to have been recognized for his work by the Nova Scotia Legislature, with The Honorable Lena Diab, one of his many friends, making the presentation.
He leaves his son Michael (Sharon (Eric and Kaitlin)), his daughter Kelly (Anne-Louise), and a bevy of granddaughters whom he adored, and who will always be known as his girls - Sarah, Jordan, Lindsay, Dayna, Grace. He is predeceased by his wife Patricia, his son Timothy (Debbie), Sam the golden retriever, Benjamin the rabbit, and several goldfish.
As per Bert’s wishes for a simple funeral, there will be family Celebration of Life and a private internment of his ashes with Pat in Mt Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto at a later date.
We would delighted to receive your thoughts and memories online at Cruickshank Funeral Home in Halifax.
