

Basil J. Spears, 91 years of Camp Hill, Halifax, passed away August 10, 2015. Born at Ketch Harbour to the late John E. and Agnes (Martin) Spears, he was a veteran of the Second World War having served four years with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Well known in the construction trade in Halifax, having worked with Brookfield Construction and Pryor Construction for thirty-nine years as carpenter foreman and general superintendent until his retirement in 1986. Basil was Past Grand Knight of Council 5017 of the Knights of Columbus, member of Branch number 25 of the Royal Canadian Legion and St. Mary's Lawn Bowling Club. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Missions to Seamen. He is survived by his daughter Debbie (Jeff), granddaughter Stephannie and great grandson Ryan, sister Mary (Schnare) and brother Kenneth. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife of forty-two years, the former Viola McNally, brothers Gerald and William and sister Joan. A memorial mass will be held at St. Peter's Church, Ketch Harbour Tuesday August 18, 2015 at 1pm . The body has been cremated. Burial to take place in the family plot at Gethsemane Cemetery, Ketch Harbour. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Canadian Arthritis Society or any charity of one's choice. A special thank you to the wonderful staff of five West in Camp Hill Hospital for their extraordinary care of Basil.
