It is with great sadness that I announce my dear mother, Bick Hong (Seto) passed away on September 27, 2022, in the QEII Infirmary Site, Halifax. Born on December 10, 1929 in Kaiping, Chek Sun Dai Fu Lee, Canton she was the daughter of Mrs. Mui Kui Seto (Fong).
Bick married Mong Ton Hong on August 21, 1947. In 1949, they welcomed their first daughter, Kathy on March 5, 1949. Three months after Kathy’s birth, Mong Ton emigrated to Canada for work. In 1964, after a lengthy separation due to emigration, Mong Ton was able to sponsor Bick and Kathy to join him in Pembroke, ON from Hong Kong. In July 1966 they welcomed their second daughter, Connie. In 1969, the family moved to Halifax, NS to join Mong Ton’s sister, Kem and her husband Frank Seto in the restaurant business. Both Bick and Mong Ton were cooks in the restaurant. In 1975 they started their own business, The Gin Kee Hing Restaurant, along with Kathy and her husband, Ken Seto. In 1986 Mong and Bick sold the restaurant and retired.
Bick worked hard throughout her life. She grew up with modest means in China and once she moved to Canada, worked hard and saved her money so that her children could have a better life. During Bick’s retirement years, she enjoyed socializing with Kem and Frank along with the Fong’s in friendly games of Mah Jong along with lots of treats.
Bick was also an avid gardener and enjoyed her vegetable garden and watching Satellite TV with the specialty Chinese channels. Though Bick did not speak much English, she had a very kind soul, and she always found another way to communicate with a nod, a thank you or through her beautiful smile.
Bick was predeceased by her mother, Mui Kui Seto; brother, Jong Szeto; a sister in China; husband, Mong Ton; and daughter, Kathy Seto. Bick is survived by her daughter, Connie Hong; godson, Andrew Seto and lots of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday October 6, from 5-8pm and on Friday October 7 from 10-11am at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home Halifax, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. The service will be held after the visitation on Friday at 11am in the chapel followed by the interment at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery.
