It is with great sorrow that the family of Ellen Clare Miller, age 80, announce her passing on April 20, 2015 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre while surrounded by her loving family. Clare was born May 22, 1934 and was the daughter of the late Lionel and Eva (Hayes) Pelham. She lived in Halifax her entire life and was proud to be called a Nova Scotian. Clare graduated from the Nova Scotia Normal College (Teachers College) and taught for several years at St. Patrick's Boys School in Halifax. After teaching, Clare's main focus was looking after her cherished family as a Stay-at-Home Mother and was happiest spending time with her family. She loved preparing Sunday dinners for the entire family and always had enough to share with anyone who happened to drop by for a visit. Her kindness and generosity of spirit towards family, friends and those less fortunate were evident to all. Her children and grandchildren were the love of her life. Many of Clare's fondest memories were of good times spent at her family cottage in Herring Cove. Her heart was always in “The Cove”.
She was a proud member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Halifax as well as St. Paul's Church in Herring Cove. Clare’s Catholic faith gave her great strength her entire life. Clare is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, John, son David (Dawn), Andrew (Margot), daughter Eva (Joseph Briand); grandchildren Katie, Rachel and Matt Miller; Polly, Becky, Andrea and Richard Miller; Lily and Celia Briand; sister Margaret Cullinan; sister-in-law Mary Ann Pelham, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Sheila Pelham and brother, David Pelham.
Visitation will be held on Sunday May 3, at Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St in Halifax, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral mass will be held on Monday May 4, at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Mumford Road at 10AM. The family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent care given by the QEII Pulmonary Clinic, Nursing Staff of the VON, the QEII Emergency Department and the Staff of Nursing Unit 8.2. Special thanks for the care given and the compassionate understanding shown by Dr. David Haase and his entire team.
