Daniel John (Danny) Clarke passed away on July 14, 2015 after a brief but valiant battle with ALS. He was the son of the late Edward and Dorothy (Feetham) Clarke. A lifelong resident of Halifax, he was a graduate of Saint Mary’s University and Dalhousie Law School. After a short teaching career at St. Mary’s School he worked in his community as both a lawyer and a distinguished public servant. In 1976 he was elected alderman, serving two terms on City Council, and was appointed Deputy Mayor. He ran as a Liberal Candidate in three provincial elections and served as a member of the Halifax School Board where he fought diligently and successfully to protect neighborhood schools from closure. He was active in many charitable endeavors, notably the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society, and was a strong believer in the sanctity of life. Danny considered his greatest challenge and achievement to be his decisive victory over alcoholism which he credited solely to his faith in God.
He is survived by his longtime companion and soul mate Marcia Meagher, sons Jonathan (Jennifer) and Joshua, beloved grandsons Luke and Logan Clarke and Mateo Jude. He was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy Ann and Marjorie Landry. He is survived by siblings, Patricia Butler, Edward Clarke, Catherine LeVangie, Mary Clarke and Bob Clarke as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Danny travelled extensively and harbored a love particularly for Scotland, his ancestral home, and Florida, his winter refuge. He took great delight in spending time not only with his grandsons but also with his step grandchildren: William, Riley, Juliet and Adam Burchell; Julia and James Locke. His annual pirate hunt in Queensland every summer was a much anticipated event. He will be sorely missed.
Special thanks to the First Floor Staff at Northwood Center and to those wonderful friends and relatives who faithfully attended to him during his illness. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cruikshanks Funeral Home on Windsor Street where visitation will be held from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8pm on Wednesday July 22. Funeral Mass at St. Agnes Parish will take place at 11 am on Thursday July 23. No flowers by request. Donations in Dan’s name can be made to a charity of your choice.
