He gave generously to all in many different ways and accepted very little in return; the joy of providing was reward enough. He loved the simple things: a beer with a friend, a good book, a sunny summer afternoon on his boat, a Sunday morning trail walk.
David, a seasoned federal prosecutor, worked on some of the most sensitive and complex cases across the country. He excelled at crafting arguments that were both concise and persuasive for trial and appellate courts. In addition to his own work, he spent many hours of his time assisting his colleagues with their cases and mentoring many newly called lawyers.
His work also extended to legal writing and teaching. As a legal writer, he co-authored a prize-winning text on search and seizure law in Canada, aptly titled Search and Seizure.
As a teacher at the Schulich School of Law in Halifax, he taught criminal law and organized the moot court program over the last several years. He truly loved working with students, watching as each began to “think” like a lawyer and develop their legal mindset. Outside of the school, David led and participated in many training programs for members of the legal profession, as well as the police and other investigative agencies, both nationally and regionally. He was a faculty member of the Federation of Law Societies’ National Criminal Law Program since 2004.
His love of teaching spilled over into his many years of volunteer work with the Halifax Hawks recreational hockey league. As a coach and board member, he demonstrated that fair play and having fun are the real goals; in hockey and life!
His family is grateful for the excellent medical care given to David by the staff in the E.N.T. department, the Cancer Centre and Palliative Care Unit in the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
David’s life will be honoured at a gathering from 4 – 7 pm on October 24, 2025 at the Aurora North End Parish Church, at 5666 Sebastian St, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Feed Nova Scotia or to any charity of one’s choice; in the alternative, give someone in need a helping hand, as David would have done.
