Born in Steam Mill Kings County Nova Scotia Dr. Reid was the son of Margaret (Peggy) nee Middleton and Earle Reid.
Dr. Reid had many interests that he pursued with determined and passionate vigor. Relaxation for Dr. Reid usually involved reading, gardening and his latest passion farming (a re-visit of his childhood growing up and working on the family farm). Dr. Reid was an ardent supporter of health and healthcare policy reform; this supported by a extensive knowledge of health care systems in the US, Europe, Britain and Russia.
After losing his father at the age of 6 due to a lack of prompt medical attention, Dr. Reid’s future was determined. Driven to become a doctor he studied his way by lamp-light before and after chores on the farm to a Governor General’s award for scholastic excellence. He pursued and attained his medical degree at Dalhousie University in 1957.
Dr. Reid (M.D., C.M., F.R.C.P. (C), F.A.C.C., F.A.C.P) started his practice 1957 (in Kentville NS) as a General Practitioner until moving to Halifax in 1965 to specialize. From 1965 to present he practiced medicine as a Specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. From 1970 to 1985 Dr. Reid was Director of Intensive Care, Head of the Department of Medicine and president of Medical Staff at the old Halifax Infirmary (Queen St.). From 1969-2001 Dr. Reid served at Dalhousie University as Faculty of Medicine Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and from 1972 to 1985 he served as a Medical Advisory Committee Member. From 1991 to present, Dr. Reid was co-founder of and President of, North South Health Policy and Management Group. From 1983 to 1993 Dr. Reid was a Commissioner for the NS Commission on Drug Dependency and from 1988 to 1990 he was Vice Chair and Senior Medical Advisor to the Nova Scotia Royal Commission on Health Care.
Dr. Reid was predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 50 years Janet (nee Dexter). While attending Dalhousie University, Dr. Reid was introduced to Janet during a youth dance at Bethany United church where they were later married. Dr. Reid was an active member of Bethany United Church for more than 55 years.
Dr. Reid is survived by 3 sons David, Douglas (Sharon) and Greg. He also has 3 brothers John (Marlene), Ivan (Janet) and George (Cheryl Ann) and was predeceased by his brother William (Bill). He also is survived by his sister in-law Donna Dexter; 7 grand children (Nicole Gyorfi (Nick), Alexander, Jonathan, Julianne, Liam, Keegan and Benjamin); as well as 2 great grandchildren (Alexander and Mya). Dr. Reid is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Reid was a family man; a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as devoted son and brother. Dr. Reid was a passionate physician and loyal friend. He will be missed.
Funeral services for Dr. Reid will be held at Bethany United Church 5151 Clinton Avenue, Halifax Nova Scotia on Saturday, June 4th 2011 beginning at 2:00 PM.
