It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elinor 'Joyce' Coles (nee Ling), at the age of 90 on 2024-08-29. She passed quickly and peacefully of natural causes.
Born in Pleasant Valley, PEI, she was the daughter of the late Hammond and Hazel 'Glenn' (Wigmore) Ling.
Predeceased by her parents, her brother Norman, sisters Gwyneth Ling and Phyllis Dickieson, and her son David Coles (2024-02-15). She is survived by her husband Keith Coles, son Alan Coles (Anna Magyar), grandchildren Alexander Coles, Andrew Coles, Jonathan Coles, Michael Coles, and Ellen Coles MacPhee, and her very special great grandchildren, Kira Coles, Malcolm MacPhee, and Meadow Coles, sisters-in-law Judy Burgoyne and Audrey Ling, and nephews Ian and Kevin Dickieson, and Stephen, David, and Keith Ling.
Keith and Joyce were married on February 1953, in PEI and the family moved to Halifax in 1956. Throughout their 71-years of marriage, Keith and Joyce were partners in their work, busy social life, and very extensive travels. One complimented the other. Joyce worked for R L Crain Ltd., before joining the family insurance business, The Coles Group Inc., where she built strong, lasting, and cherished relationships with our clients.
Joyce was a true “force of nature”. Her warm, outgoing, engaging personality and sharp whit, captured most everyone that came within her orbit and meant that she made many great and cherished friends that lasted her lifetime, whether it was in Halifax, their winter place in Delray Beach, FL. (for over 40-years), or through their many, many travels, Joyce was always engaged and busy. Outside of the family business she volunteered and gave her time to many causes including her church. Active in politics, she knew several Prime Ministers on a first name basis as well as many Nova Scotia Premiers and countless MLAs, Mayors, etc.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff, at the QE for their very kind, caring, and professional support during her last hours.
