Florence Bertha Martin

Florence Bertha Martin nee Gaetz. Passed away peacefully in her sleep at Northwood Nursing home in Halifax on 19 September 2024 at the young age of 106.

She was born Jan 08, 1918 in Seafoth, Nova Scotia and was the daughter of the late Amos and Laura Gaetz. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Martin; brothers Horace and Creighton: sisters Helen, Grace and Myrtle.

She was a long-time employee of Ben’s Bakery in Halifax and worked in the office for 40 plus years conducting all forms of administration.

Florence was a long-time resident of Macdonald Laurier Seniors complex in Fairview where she was a member of the social club and enjoyed such social events as corn boils, Bingo, BBQs, reading, scrabble, constructing puzzles with her friends and her prized knitting. She tirelessly spent the majority of her time knitting little mittens, well over 2000 pairs, which were distributed throughout the Elementary schools in HRM and she is credited with keeping many children’s hands warm from the wintery cold.

Her needs and requests were adhered to by her friends from the neighborhood in Michael and Bonnie Hillier whom she credits for adding 10 years to her life through their great care, meals and the friendship they provided her.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

No formal service was requested. She has been cremated and will be buried alongside her husband during a graveside ceremony at the Fairview cemetery on Thursday Oct 17 at 2:00pm.
