Frances Janet Audain

September 1, 1938January 5, 2021

On Tuesday, January 5, 2021, Frances Janet Audain, loving mother of 2 sons and grandmother of 2 granddaughters, passed away at age 82.

Janet was born on September 1, 1938 in Charlottetown, PEI to Alexander and Helen (Farquharson) Matheson. She received her Master of Arts degree in 1962, followed by a Diploma in Clinical Psychology in 1965 from Dalhousie University. She practiced psychology for many years in Halifax before joining Vince to manage his busy medical practice. In June, 1968, she married Dr. Vincent Audain. They raised two sons, Colin and Brian.

Janet had a passion for reading, bird watching, cooking and gardening. She could often be found curled up on a couch covered with a blanket and many, many books. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She was known for her quick wit, her peaceful and gentle manner, and her kind and compassionate spirit. According to her granddaughters “Nanny was smart and knew a lot about everything. She was fun, nice and a good listener.”

Janet was preceded in death by her father, Alexander, her mother, Helen, sister, Ellen, brother, James and her beloved husband, Vince. She is survived by her two sons, Colin (Lori McDonald) and Brian (Patricia Power), two granddaughters, Grace and Charlotte, and two brothers, Thomas and Andrew.

A private family funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 9th, 2021 in the Chapel of Cruikshank’s Funeral Home on Winsor Street in Halifax.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in Janet’s memory, to the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation or a charity of your choice.

I was so saddened to hear about Janet. I had hoped to meet her again the next time I came east. My best friend until she died was her sister Ellen. I spent my summers at Keppoch with Ellen and we were both in awe of her big sister. Aunt Helen and Uncle Alex were always kind and generous to our family. They and their family have been important persons in my life. She will be remembered and it saddens me to think of the years we have not connected. I am so glad she was a grandmother and could have that joy.

Sending sincerest condolences in the loss of your mother and grandmother..As a member of WICS I came to know and enjoy Janet’s (and Vince’s ) company on many occasions.
We shared many pleasant moments.
As our paths sometimes crossed in the Health Care field, I was also aware of her as a competent professional during her career.
You were blessed to have had such a lovely mother whom I know
You will miss dearly.
I will hold her in memory and in my prayers.

I would like to share my condolences to the Audain Family. I am not sure if you even remember who i am , but i used to play soccer with Brian with H.H. Marshall in the eighties. I lost my mother and father over 22 years ago and i understand your pain and loss but i hope during this difficult time you can find some peace and happiness in the wonderful memories your family has created. After the grief and the sadness all we are left with are the memories and even to this day i am still comforted by their memories as i am sure your mother will provide you .

My sister and I were sorry to hear of Janet's death. We shared time with her in Parkland and often spoke with her. When she first arrived I told her what fond memories I had of her mother as my teacher in Grade 1 West Kent School. We send our condolences to the family.

We were warmly welcomed as neighbours by the Audain's in 1993. Janet and I often talked about birds which she loved. I have warm memories of both Janet and Vince. Our sympathy to all the family. Sincerely, Jim and Diana
