

Johnston, Gerald Reginald, 88 of Halifax, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 6, 2016. Born in Halifax he was the son of the late Frederick and Gladys (Waldron) Johnston. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Esther Pearl (Loppie) and daughter Ethel Johnston.
He is survived by his children, Gerald “Markie” (Sandra) of Halifax, Christopher (Stephanie) of Dartmouth, Christine (Andrew), Shirley and Tanya (the late Andrew Sparks) all of Halifax; grandchildren, Justin (Elenore) of the Philippines, Jerrice, Glynn (Lisa), Taylor, Jordyn, Teanna, Kaitlyn, Jayla, Jordyn all of Halifax; great-grandchildren Violet, Gabriel and John; his sister, Winnifred Bowden; also will be missed by Shyla and Chayce; his nieces, Faith and Freda and Godchildren, Dennis, Devon, Darcelle, Darnelda and Dawn; and many family members and friends.
Gerald was predeceased by his siblings, Douglas, Garnet, Frederick, Donald and Marie.
Deacon Emeritus, Gerald was a faithful member of the Cornwallis Street Baptist Church and was committed to serving his church community for over 60 years. He was employed with the Merchant Navy League of Canada, Halifax School Board and was the first black employee at the Halifax Regional Library. Gerald was a dedicated employee of Camp Hill Veterans Hospital until he retired in 1988. At age 15 he began volunteering. He started the infamous Halifax Super Tiger Cats floor hockey team which he proudly coached for over 40 years.

Visitation will take place on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 1pm from Cornwallis Street Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cornwallis Street United Baptist Church Building Fund.
