Born 1924 to Margaret O’Connell and John Rae MacLeod, she was youngest of four children and the last surviving member of her immediate family, passed away on July 30, 2021 at Saint Vincent Nursing Home where she resided.
Mom has called STVN her home for the last few years, but prior to that lived very independently in her home until she was 93, with great help from her daughter Lisa and her wonderful neighbors, until her health started deteriorating.
Mom married Carmen Snow at a young age and they had a daughter Susan Jessie. They lived in Aylmer, Ontario for a couple of years before returning to Halifax, where Mom worked at Schwartz and then Moirs Chocolate Factory in the payroll department where she met her second husband Hugh Ferguson, who she subsequently married in 1962 and had daughter Lisa.
After an extended time at Moir’s she went to work for her favorite boss at Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia where she ended her working career at the age of 65. During her many years at APENS Mom knew every Engineer that passed through the association door, everyone knew "Gertie". She was always helpful, knowledgeable and her smile will be remembered by many.
During her long life she was a well-known Avon Representative. She always had a goal each year that she sold, which was to achieve the status of Presidents Club. She always felt she would never achieve it, but being the salesperson she was, she was always successful in this goal.
Our Mom lived by the golden rule “to lend a helping hand" and was well known in her neighborhood as the ”go to person”. Mom was a big animal lover and had many cats during her life, she always enjoyed the surprise visits from her grand-dogs.
The family would like to thank all the staff at St Vincent's, especially the members of the 2nd floor, for making Mom's last couple of years a wonderful experience for her and the family.
She leaves to mourn her daughters Susan (Grant Redding, Shelburne NS) and Lisa Ferguson (Dennis Morrison, Prospect Bay NS); and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters Margaret Anderson and Sheila Nelson; brother Johnny MacLeod; first husband Carmen Snow; and second husband Hugh Ferguson.
Your long journey is over MOM - REST IN PEACE
