With a heavy heart, we announce the death of Getachew Aboi Gibanchia, known affectionately as ‘Getcho’ on Saturday, June 25th, 2022, in Halifax, N.S., at the young age of 38 years old. He was born 13th of May 1984 in Hosaena in Southern Ethiopia and was the son of the late Aboi (Abeda) Gibanchia and Madebasa Hussan.
Getcho completed his high school in Ethiopia and was enrolled in a 3-year diploma program in engineering in Ethiopia. His studies were interrupted when he had to travel to South Africa in 2005. While in South Africa, Getcho operated and owned a corner store until 2012. While running his business in South Africa, his fiancée Senait Shewarga joined him from Addis Ababa, and they were married the year of 2011. A year later, they welcomed their first born, Jonathan, May 20th, 2012, four years later, on January 27th, 2016, they welcomed their twins’ sons, Euale and Eyoseyas. Getcho also worked as a truck driver in South Africa his carrier was interrupted in November 2015 due to a brain tumor that had advanced and created vision problems. Getcho started radiation treatment in December 2015.
Getcho and his family migrated in Halifax on October 24, 2019. He was a born again Christian and had full of joy and hope in Jesus Christ. He continued his life in sickness or in health, Getcho maintained a very positive attitude. Together with his supportive wife Senait they faced his sickness without complaining, and always praising God for the time spent together as a family. Getcho was a very strong believer in the Christian Faith and was an inspiration to many people. He regularly attended service at the Rehoboth Evangelical Church in Halifax, where he would be heard singing joyful songs praising and worshipping God.
As his eyesight and his vison got worse, Getcho was studying brail as well receiving many skills from the CNIB Foundation is a non-profit organization to help him lead an independent life. He was getting good at it and enjoying this new style of living when the pandemic hit in Canada and all his instructions he was receiving where interrupted. Eventually, Getcho’s cancerous tumor got worse, and he lost the battle and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Saturday, June 25th.
He is survived by his wife Senait Shewarga; sons: Jonathan Gibanchia (10); Euale Gibanchia and Eyoseyas Gibanchia (6); Getcho is also survived by his brothers: Taddesse, Tamerat, Abera, Wendemu, Werkhu Gibanchia and his sisters: Zenebetch and Fate (Fera). Getcho was predeceased by his parents and his late brother Ashenafe.
