

PHILLIPS, Dr. H. Ralph, MDCM, CCFP— 87, of Head of St. Margaret's Bay, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2009, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Arlington, P.E.I., he was a son of the late William Gordon and Dorothea (Rodd) Phillips. He attended Prince of Wales College, Prince Edward Island, and Dalhousie Medical School, graduating in 1950, following two years of military service. He settled in Halifax and practiced family medicine until retirement. He was a member of the 104th Bedford Masonic Lodge and other concordant bodies and Philae Shriners. He was the founding president of the Nova Scotia Society of Clinical Hypnosis and in 1996 received an award by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis for his outstanding contribution for the advancement of hypnosis through his continued effort as a teacher and a clinician. It was his desire to inspire others in all health professions to practice clinical hypnosis. He was committed to medicine and education and initiated a scholarship for health professionals to advance their studies in clinical hypnosis. He was a member of Bethany United Church. He was past commodore of St. Margaret's Bay Sailing Club. He loved his family deeply and cherished every minute with them. He especially loved family vacations. He loved to travel and he especially loved St. Margaret's Bay and time spent at his cottage in Prince Edward Island. For those who knew him well he was a very humble and private person and generous to a fault. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother, George Phillips. Surviving are his wife, Caroline (Canty) Phillips; twin daughters, Sharon (Jim) Davis, Bridgewater; Karen (Stephen) Fry, Halifax, and son, William (Shirley) Phillips of Halifax. He is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher (Maddalena) Fry, Calgary, Alta.; Catherine (Evan) Paterson, Calgary, Alta.; Victoria Fry, Andrew (Erica) Phillips, Matthew Phillips, Jennifer Phillips, Craig Davis and Laura Davis and great-granddaughters, Hailey and Emily. He is also survived by brothers, Wendell and Dr. Carlyle Phillips; sisters, Eleanor Gates, Gwen Matthews, Edna MacGregor and Carolyn Ross. He will be deeply missed by all those he cherished and loved. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff and physicians of 8.4, QEII Health Sciences Centre, for their kindness and care during a very difficult time, and Nightingale Nursing Services for being there when we needed them. We would also like to thank the staff of the dialysis unit. Visitation will take place 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, December 8 with a Masonic Service during the visitation in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. The funeral service will be held in Bethany United Church, Halifax Wednesday, December 9 at 2 p.m. Interment to take place at 2 p.m., Thursday, December 10, in Lot 14 United Church Cemetery.
