Age 93, passed away on February 22, 2016, in Parkland at the Gardens, Halifax. She was a daughter of William and Racelle Fraser of New Glasgow.
Betty grew up in New Glasgow, worked there during the war and went to Dalhousie University in 1946 to train as a lab technician. She worked first in Sackville, N.B., where she met Rich Fulton who was at Mount Allison University. They married in 1949, living first for a few years in Truro and then moving to Dartmouth. Betty worked over the years at Dartmouth Medical Centre, the Nova Scotia Hospital, and in a wide variety of retail jobs where she enjoyed meeting people and making friends.
She loved music, especially opera and classical, and she sang for many years as a member of Grace United Church choir in Dartmouth. She loved reading and never stopped learning, studying Spanish in her retirement and volunteering as a docent at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. During those early years of her retirement, she loved to travel and went on jaunts organized by the Art Gallery to see galleries in Europe and North America. She also volunteered for a few years at the Dartmouth Heritage Museum.
She enjoyed taking continuing education classes, and she and Rich were regulars at Elder Learner sessions and excursions around the Maritimes. Her favorite place was her cottage at Chance Harbour, Pictou Co., where she hosted family get-togethers, went swimming and tended her beloved garden.
Betty was the last surviving member of her family, having been predeceased by sisters, Wynne Fowler, Jean Gardner and Vera Smith; brothers, Holly, Bill and Roy Fraser. Her husband, Rich, passed away in 2010.
Betty is survived by daughters, Jane (Stephen) Hart, Barbara (Paul Shilton); sons, Brad (Jude), Scott (Angela Deveaux). She has five grandchildren, Nicholas (Adrianna Mackenzie) Hart, Andrew (Breighan Hunsley) Hart, Jessica (Brandon) Evenson, Alexa (Dan Gaston) Fulton, and Christopher Fulton; great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Acacia, Adeline, Rowan and Fox.
The family would like to thank the staff on the third floor at Parkland. They helped make her last years enjoyable and very comfortable. Their kindness and excellent care was greatly appreciated by Mom and all of us. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Betty's life in Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax on Friday, March 11 at 3 p.m. Donations in her memory may be made to your local food bank.
