JAMES C. WITHROW, 81, of Halifax had a peaceful passing on July 11 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was at home with his wife and daughters caring for him, supported by grandchildren and extended family and listening to Piano Perfect.
Jamie was born in Halifax to James and Margaret (MacIntyre) Withrow.
He attended Sir Charles Tupper, Cornwallis Junior High, QEH and Dalhousie University. He played hockey for the Seagulls & Citadels Midgets, basketball and football in his youth. Always interested in real estate, he started a successful business with his brother John in 1968.
Jamie enjoyed his elementary school days where early friendships began and continue to this day. He spent summers visiting the farm in Rawdon, Big Cove Camp and sailing at the Waeg.
Summer employment took him to the bush in Northern Manitoba with Keith, picking tobacco in Delhi at Katie’s and working at Withrow’s Pharmacy.
Jamie enjoyed curling at the Mayflower, The Monctonian was an annual event with good friends.
He was a Philae Shriner and enjoyed amusing the crowds with antics of the Mini Bike Patrol.
He loved the open water and his cruises and Island trips with Ron, sailing adventures with Captain Dave, and many years in Queensland at the Kennedy compound with epic Labour Day gatherings. Good times were had on family vacations and visits to Aunt Edie & Uncle Max in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. He enjoyed having close friends and family dinners at home. Jamie was a donor of over 100 units of blood to the Red Cross. He was a faithful and supportive parent who attended and drove Heather, Stacy and their teammates to their sports which carried on in watching his grandsons in all their pursuits. Jamie never forgot his Rawdon roots, where he got his “start”. He was always keen to listen and observe and he entertained others with his sharp, witty one-liners and genuine thoughtfulness.
Jamie was preceded in death by his parents James & Margaret, brother, John, sister-in-law Patricia Swain and her husband John. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret (Cuming), Halifax, his two daughters, Heather (Karl) Kowalczyk, Halifax, Stacy (Darren) Fichter, Calgary and grandchildren Thomas, Ben, Ella, Josh and Sophie, who were so important to him. Also, sister-in-law, Carolyn Withrow, brother-in-law, Bob Cuming and Jane, niece, Karen, nephews John (Dana) Withrow and girls, Eric (Jolyn) Swain and boys, Chris (Corinne) Swain and many close cousins.
