

John served in the Second World War from 1939 - 1945 with the First Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers. Following the war he served as secretary for the Veterans’ Association. He established the Britten-O’Neill Papers and worked on them for years helping to keep fellow veterans abreast of the First Field Company reunions and related news.
When he returned from overseas, he worked for the Post Office as railway clerk and supervisor. For years Dad would make an outdoor rink in our backyard which provided endless hours of fun for the neighborhood kids. He was a dedicated father who spent endless hours at the rink and ball field with his children. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Arlene; brother James; sister Kathleen Baldwin.
John is survived by his daughter Mary; two sons Michael (Darlene) and Patrick (Elizabeth); grandchildren Laura, Dan, John, Curtis, Jason, Kimberlee, Christopher, and Amanda.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 2 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 3, 2012, at 1 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Bayers Road. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
