

Butler, J. Richard (Rick) – 59, of Halifax, passed away suddenly Sunday, July 27, 2008. Born in Saint John, NB he was the son of Nan (George) and the late Gerry Butler (Saint John, NB). He was a graduate of UPEI and worked as a financial consultant and pension expert with CJ Matthews and Associates, all over the Maritimes. Rick enjoyed spending time with family and friends, live sports (Expos), woodworking and was an avid model train collector. For 25-years he was a member of the Bedford Tuesday Night Hockey League and also belonged to the Saint John Royal Canadian Legion Branch #002. In his earlier years, he was a Captain in the Canadian Air Force Reserve, and a hockey coach for Bedford Recreation. His love for aviation led him to become a member of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, the Silver Dart Chapter. Rick was also a Rotarian.
His loving companion, Bev Gallagher, survives him. He is also survived by his former wife Jane Creaser and their children Gwen Butcher (Troy) and Matthew Butler (Vanessa Harding). He will be greatly missed by his family, especially his granddaughter, Maya, whom he loved dearly.
Rick also leaves behind his sisters, Nancy Cross (Bob Richardson) of Charlottetown PEI; Gloria Rushton (Rick), Betty Macdonald (Ian) and brother Michael, all of Saint John, NB; and several nieces and nephews. His step daughters Jacki and Erin Whiteley will also miss him. His daughter, Shannon, predeceases him.
Visitation will be held Wednesday July 30th and Thursday July 31st from 6-8 pm at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor street , Halifax. The Funeral Service will be held Friday, August 1st at 2 pm, also at Snow’s. The interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery in Bedford. Rick’s generous and jovial disposition brought joy to everyone he met and everyone around him was happy to have known him. He will be greatly missed. Donations may be made to Nature Conservancy Canada (NCC).
