Jose Antonio Kuan Veng, May 20, 1964 - January 3, 2026
"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." A.A. Milne
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jose Antonio Kuan-Veng on January 3, 2026, enveloped in love by his wife, Wendy Bogers-Kuan Veng; his children, Mikayla and Caleb Kuan Veng; his son-in-law, Patrick McSweeney; and his cherished granddaughter, Saoirse Blanca Aileen McSweeney.
Jose was born in Lima, Peru, to his loving mother, Blanca Cabrera; his father, Fortunato Kuan Veng; and his older brother, Alejandro Kuan Veng. With a deep love of Peruvian culture, great food, music, and a strong dedication to family and friends, Jose and his family moved to Mississauga, Ontario, in 1976 to join his Tío Ricardo Cabrera, Tía Charo (Maria), and cousins Monica (Murray) and Jaime Cabrera. Jose worked hard to learn English, excel in school, help
his family adjust to life in Canada, make friends, and play soccer. He went on to study civil engineering technology at Ryerson University.
Hired by his mentor and teacher, Janet Willings, Jose met his wife, Wendy Bogers, at Willings and Associates in Toronto. His gentle, loving ways and boisterous laugh won her heart. They married, moved to Newmarket, Ontario, and welcomed two amazing children, Mikayla and Caleb.
Jose was a devoted father who always put the needs and happiness of his family first. He loved soccer, running, drawing, and nature, and he willingly stepped outside his comfort zone to support his family-trying activities such as scuba diving, downhill skiing, camping, fishing, swimming, building, and travelling to China to be with his daughter. He worked in a variety of project coordinator positions, with highlights including the historic renovation of the Princess Gates and work on the Athletes' Village for the 2015 Pan Am Games, both in Toronto.
In 2020, Jose, Wendy, and Caleb moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to be closer to Mikayla and her partner, Patrick. They created a beautiful life and spent much time together exploring the amazing sights of the East Coast. Jose continued working as a project coordinator until January 2025, when he was diagnosed with AML.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and support staff of the Hematology Unit at Victoria General Hospital, especially Dr. Mahmoud Elsawy, for their compassion, dedication, and care throughout the past year. Jose bravely fought cancer twice in his lifetime.
He rarely complained, choosing instead to face each day with hope, positivity, and dignity. The nurses truly loved him, and he was an extraordinary role model for his children.
We also thank the many family members and friends who travelled to Halifax, called, and sent messages to support his family during this very difficult time. Jose will be forever loved and deeply missed. Que sueñes con los angelitos, mi amor.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Ontario.
