Joseph Simon Lelievre
09 Aug 1931 – 20 Jun 2025
Joseph Simon Lelievre passed away at his residence on June 20th, 2025. He was a month and a half shy of his 94th birthday. Joe (as we all knew him), son of the late Simon Lelievre and Elizabeth Aubut, was born on August 9th, 1931, in Kenogami, Gaspe, Quebec. He is survived by his brother Andre and his niece Gina. He was predeceased by brothers Gerald, Robert and Jean-Claude.
Joe joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1952 and went through basic training in HMCS Cornwallis. He served for five years, took his release, and then made his way to Hollywood to be a “movie star”. After being told he was an “Alien” there, he returned to Canada and rejoined the Navy where he spent the next 30 years serving as a Naval Weapons Technician on a number of ships. He was proud to show off a ballcap for every one of those ships.
After retiring from the Navy, Joe moved to Montreal where he enjoyed going to Expo ballgames and Montreal Canadiens games. Joe was a tremendous sports fan. Joe moved back to Halifax to be close to his Navy family in 2009. He was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Naval Association Peregrine Branch and a Life Member of the HMCS Sackville Trust.
On sunny days, Joe could be seen riding his electric “buggy”, as he called it, downtown Halifax and on the boardwalk down by the waterfront. He really enjoyed riding around outside when it wasn’t raining or snowing.
Joe’s funeral service will be held at the Stadacona Chapel at 11 am on July 15th, followed with interment at the Veteran’s Columbarium at the Fairview Cemetery. The reception will be held at the Royal Canadian Naval Association, Peregrine Branch, 3660 Commission St (Suite C in the basement), Halifax where you can share your memories and stories from 1 to 4 pm.
