Born in North Preston, Nova Scotia, where she referred to as “HOME”, she was the daughter of the late Florence Downey and the late Clarence Johnson. Kathleen was the last living member of her family.
Kathleen is survived by her sons: James, Stanford “Ducky” (Pat), Derrick, and David “Dino” (Kim); daughters: Kathleen “Leeny,” Theresa, and Sandra (Shawn); 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband George Whalen, son: George, brother: Arthur, sisters: Florence and Lydia.
Affectionately called ”Kass” or “Kaye,” she worked for 20+ years in the housekeeping department of the old Halifax Infirmary on Queen Street. Kass was a member of the New Horizons Baptist Church (formerly Cornwallis Street Baptist Church) where you would find her Sunday mornings in her favorite seat on the balcony, until her health started to decline. She was a truly kind, humble, and generous person who would always make baked goods and quilts for friends and family. Kathleen loved a good time, laughter and being around young people.
Special thanks to Dr. J Fraser of the North End Community Health Centre (NECHC) for his loving care over the years.
