Leo Steve Grouse, 65, passed away peacefully on July 11,2019 at Hospice Halifax with his loving partner, Brenda by his side, holding his hand to the end. Leo worked for many years at Mother Tuckers in Halifax and later at the Westin Nova Scotian before his early retirement.
Born and raised in Halifax, Leo's passion in life was his music. When health issues prevented Leo from being able to play his bass guitar, he often talked about how much he missed playing. Leo treasured the friendships he made with fellow musicians and many others over the years. "Papa Leo", as the grandchildren of his extended family affectionately named him, put family first. When his health permitted, Leo was always up for a trip to New Brunswick to visit with Ryan and Emma. Leo also cherished the time when his brother Emmanuel would visit with his grandchildren. Leo's infectious smile lit up the room; his smile will shine on.
Leo was predeceased by his mother Irene Grouse (Downey); father Henry Grouse; brothers Benny Downey, Ronald, John Henry, Leonard and Elvis Grouse, and his sister Rosella Fraser. He is survived and will be missed by his partner Brenda Poirier and sisters, Celia McQuaid of Halifax; Janet (James) Wilson of Orleans (Ont); Valerie Wynder of Dartmouth; Charlene (Shellen) Grouse of Halifax and his brother Emmanuel Grouse of Halifax along with members of his extended family; Amanda, Shannon, Ryan and Emma Kratz of Oromocto N.B.; Rebecca and Ceilidh Higgins of Halifax, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family is appreciative of the wonderful care and support received from the compassionate caregivers at Hospice Halifax and Palliative Home Care. A special thank you to Dr. Hasegawa and staff of the Hematology Department at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, and to our good friend and neighbour Maria MacDonald who would be there to help Leo at a moments notice.
A celebration of Leo's life will be held at 1:00 pm, July 19, 2019 at Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home, with Pastor Wayne Desmond officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada - Halifax Chapter, Hospice Halifax, Bide Awhile Animal Shelter or a charity of your choice.
