Marta Judy Markus

January 28, 1929September 7, 2020

Marta Markus was born on January 28, 1929 in Hungary. Marta met her husband Steven as a little girl and they later married after the end of WWII on October 27, 1946. Two years later, they moved to Israel and finally settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia in December 1959. Marta was a loving and devoted wife and they were married for 72 years up until Steven's death in 2018. As a holocaust survivor, Marta had a will to not give up. Even in her last days, she fought for her life, living longer than many doctors expected. Marta was known for having a spirited personality and sharing her zeal for life with family and friends. Her hospitality was famous; she would always cook up a storm and be able to feed an army, as it were. She always had remarkable taste and an eye for detail which she showcased through her chef-worthy meals and beautifully decorated home and shop, International China & Gifts Limited. She was loved and will be missed. Marta is survived by her two children, Susanne and Joe and her 3 grandchildren, Tanya, Julia and Andrea. Joe and Susanne
We first met your parents when we moved in next door some 42 years ago
Your mom greeted us with a cherrie smile and some delicious treats
Our friendly relationship continued for all the time we lived there

My heart goes out to you both. I was so saddened to hear of your mother's passing.
Your mother and father were such a joy to be around. My mother and your mother were great friends. Quit often when I visited Halifax Mom and I would visit your mother. They always came to mom's birthday parties after she went to live at Northwood.
I always had a special place in my heart for Mrs. Markus and will remember her fondly always.

This is one of my favourite photos of my grandparents. They loved each other very much and it showed over their 72 years of marriage.

Dear Suzanne and Joe

I was very saddened to hear of your dear mother’s passing. I always enjoyed her visits to Toronto both by herself and with your late father. I was privileged to be able to visit her in her beautiful home in Halifax in May of 2019, together with my daughter Carly. We attended a wonderful Jewish Music concert with her and the music brought her such happiness. As mentioned above, she always made sure there was food on the table and I didn’t like to deny her that pleasure.

During our visits, she spoke fondly of my late parents, and how she loved both of them. When I visited her in her home last year, I was able to take videos of her singing that I would be happy to share with you.

Marta was an incredible lively lady who has such a zest for life. She adored your late father, and she spoke endlessly about the accomplishments of both of you as well as all of her grandchildren. She was so proud.

I was also fortunate to read your late father‘s book. When I had questions about various passages, even though I noticed she was declining a little, she was able to remember various parts almost word for word!

I will always remember her fondly and I am happy that I was able to enjoy her company, to take videos of her singing and to visit her in her Halifax home.

Rest peace, dear Márta néni
You are now together with your beloved Pisti

Our condolences to you, Suzanne and Joe.
We always enjoyed having Marta at our folk dances. She was a precious presence--so absolutely Old World! She was always fully alive in the moment, putting her best energy into each dance. She has been missed these past few years and will continue to be remembered and missed.
It's hard to be orphaned, no matter what your age. May the blessed memory of your parents continue to enrich your lives.
