The death of Mollie Covert of Halifax and Sanibel, Florida occurred Thursday, July 4, 2013 in her 100th year. Born July 31, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Honourable W H Covert, Former Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia and Mary Jane (MacCulloch) Covert.
Predeceased by husband, Frank M. Covert, Q.C., O.C., and daughter, Mary Jane, in infancy. Also predeceased by brothers, Jack, George, and Bob, and sisters Kay and Peggy.
Survived by children, Michael (Carol), Susan (Julie Carroll), Peter (Anne Marie), and Sally all of Halifax; grandchildren, Michael (Ivy), Eric (Allison); Maggie (Jared) Vaughan; Blake (Bronwyn); Annie; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mollie was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion. She will be remembered for her contributions to the Kermesse, for her yellow Camaro back in the day; for her very competitive bridge games, her love of yellow roses, Chopin and André Rieu, Summerville and Carter’s Beaches in Nova Scotia and Sanibel Beach in Florida. She loved her home in Summer Gardens and its proximity to the Public Gardens where she spent many peaceful hours. She will also be remembered as a generous hostess celebrating occasions from birthdays to Kentucky Derby parties in Florida. Mollie was an avid reader and a vigorous walker who didn’t let an 85th-birthday-knee replacement stop her from her frequent fast jaunts down Spring Garden Road.
The family thanks Dr Victoria Mitchell and caregivers Jem Mendoza and Susan Manning in Halifax and Bruni Buesing in Sanibel, as well as Tina McNamara of the PATH Clinic at the QEII.
Visitation will be held at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. on Tuesday, July 9 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral Service will be at Cathedral Church of All Saints, Martello St. on Wednesday, July 10 at 2:00 pm. Family Interment will be at a later date at the White Point Cemetery. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society; the Arthritis Society, or a charity of your choice.
