

Mary Wilcox, 78, of Halifax, passed away August 15, 2024, in Halifax. She was born in St. Stephen, NB to Leonard and Eileen Wilcox of Pennfield. Mary went to Dalhousie University (BSc, Pharmacy 1968), Western (Journalism 1973), and Saint Mary’s (BA 2000).
She spent her early days as a reporter at the CBC in Charlottetown and Fredericton before settling in Halifax. She covered news and elections around the Maritimes as a national radio reporter before becoming a news editor. At the end of her career, she taught new tech to colleagues across Canada before retiring from the CBC in 1997.
She continued to work doing freelance journalism, writing and editorial work. She remained active in journalism and education - teaching in the School of Journalism at the University of King’s College and assisting at the Seniors College Association of Nova Scotia (SCANS). She also started a Maritime newsletter for the CBC Pensioners National Association and volunteered with the Women for Music Society.
In addition to news, Mary enjoyed books, the arts and travel. She travelled widely having been to Japan, Fiji, Australia, China, Russia, St Pierre et Miquelon, the U.S. and various Canadian locations, including the Territories.
Above all, Mary valued people. She cherished long standing friendships while creating new ones. She always loved seeing and hearing from family and friends.
Mary is survived by her brother David (Saint John), sister-in-law Patsy (Pennfield), nephews and nieces Scott (Montreal), Mark (Calgary), Vicki (Ottawa), Tammy (Oromocto), and Tom (Pennfield).
She was predeceased by her parents, brother John, niece Tina, and sister-in-law Connie.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Cruickshank’s Halifax Funeral Home on August 26, 2024 from 1 to 3 to share remembrances. A reception will also be held at the St. George Curling Club on August 28 from 1 to 2, immediately followed by interment at St. George Rural Cemetery.
